...to provide a single location where you can get general and instructional information on SOMBO going on in San Diego.  We'll also be creating links to the various clubs and dojos that are in San Diego, and listing national, regional and California grappling tournaments.

SOMBO Tournaments

The following is list of SOMBO tournaments from the USAW and the US Sombo Association websites.

The Origins of Sombo (Sambo)

Sombo (short for Samozoshchita Bez Oruzhive - translates to Self Defense Without Weapons) originated in Russia.  See "What is Sambo"  

Sombo Associations in the US include:

Sombo Equipment

Freestyle Sombo competitions usually require:

• Kurtka - Similar to a Judo Gi, a blue and red kurtka are normall required for competition, although a wrestling singlet is sometimes an option.

• Sambofki or Wrestling Shoes - Sambofki are the soft shoes with ankle support worn in Sombo

• Grappling Shorts - Sombo shorts should match the kurtka worn and be tight fitting. Alternatives are wrestling singlets or strapless trunks.

• Groin Protector - Required.

• Mouth Guard - Required.

• Knee Pads - Optional.

• T-Shirts - Normally T-shirts are not allowed to be worn underneath the kurtka for safety reasons.
